For once in his life, Michael felt like he really belonged. Belonged where, he wasn’t sure, but somehow it felt right to be spending the day with Eryn and Vivian at the county fair. He was a regular Joe. Not on guard or pretending to be some gangster’s soldier and trying to bring a bad guy down. No, he was just Michael. It felt good. It felt damn good.

Eryn was breathtakingly beautiful in her simple light green top and beige skirt. Her round sunglasses gave her a sassy look that he’d willingly follow anywhere. She’d pulled her thick red hair up and the unruly curls didn’t want to behave. Several locks had come loose and she’d push them behind her ear. How could someone look both cute and sexy at the same time? Vivian was equally adorable in her short blue dress. Her dark hair, which must have come from her father, was framed with a blue ribbon.

It was a perfect day. They’d looked at every exhibit, ate till they were stuffed, and spent way too much time looking at the farm animals. Vivian begged for a fluffy lop-eared rabbit. He would’ve bought it for her in a heartbeat, but Eryn gently reminded the girl they didn’t have extra money for its food and care.

Her comment brought him back to earth. Luckily, he hadn’t suggested to buy it for her. He had no right to buy her something they wouldn’t be able to afford to keep. Everything was still up in the air. Where would he be in one week? When she found out he knew where her family was, would she be gone in a heartbeat or keep running?

Eryn’s fingers tightened in the crook of his arm and she pointed to the concession stand.

“Should we get something to eat before it’s time for the show?” She suggested.

“Sure, are you hungry, Viva?” he spoke to the girl at her side. He’d found out that she preferred him to call her by her nickname.

Her big eyes looked up at him. She nodded, smiled, and took his hand. Her little hand in his and the woman at his side was almost more than he could comprehend. He was out of his element, but damn if he didn’t feel like the richest man in the world right now.

“Whatever you girls want.” He puffed out his chest.

“Michael, you’ll spoil us.” She placed her other hand on his arm. “Make sure you try some of my pie and cake. The judging should be done now so everyone can sample it.” Eryn had entered a few of the contests at the fair. She’d entered a pie and cake in the baking categories and some of the dresses she’d made for Vivian in the homemaking and sewing categories. He’d already seen her entries. Michael knew shit about sewing, but they looked perfect to him, and her baked goods had his mouth watering.

“Lead the way, girls.” Michael was in heaven as they led him to the food tent. He had the two prettiest girls in the county on each arm.
